About Us

The Ravensway Racers Swim Team was formed in 25+ years ago in the Ravensway Subdivision of Cypress, Texas. RRST fosters a team environment, yet still focuses on improving the skills of each individual swimmer. This combination results in strong, confident swimmers of all ages and abilities and true team spirit.

As a member of the Northwest Aquatic League (NWAL), RRST is a competitive summer swim team for swimmers aged 4 to 18 years old. Swimmers from Ravensway, and swimmers in nearby communities not included in another NWAL team’s ‘core area’, are eligible to be part of our team. If your swimmer wishes to swim with the Racers and you live outside of Ravensway and your neighborhood does not have a swim team, your swimmer may be eligible to swim for the Racers. 

Eligibility

It is ability, not age that permits the youngest swimmer to join the team. Swimmers are expected to be water safe and must be able to swim the 25 meter length of the pool unassisted. Minimum age for RRST is 5 years old, and they will need to be able to swim the length of the pool in both Freestyle and Backstroke without stopping to hold the lane ropes. Our younger swimmers will be evaluated and approved by our coaching staff the first two weeks of practice. There will be no refunds once practice begins, with the exception of those swimmers that don’t meet coaches’ requirements.

Age Groups

The following age groups are defined by NWAL:

6 & under

7 to 8

9 to 10

11 to 12

13 to 14

15 to 18

Eligibility to participate within an age group is determined by the individual swimmer’s age as of May 1st.

Registration and Refund Policy

The Ravensway Racers Swim Team is a non-profit group, organized solely for the benefit our children to enjoy swimming competitively with their friends. Registration occurs each year in March, prior to the start of the NWAL Summer League season.

Each family pays a per-family registration fee and then a swim fee for each individual swimmer. Fees cover the cost of a T-shirt as well as individual award ribbons for each swimmer. Fees also cover coach salaries, team equipment and other expenses necessary throughout the season. Any funds left at the end of the season are used to purchase equipment and fund the team for the following year.

Practices

Swim practice is critical to creating a successful team. Swim Team Season is short (only lasting about 10 weeks) and in order for individual swimmers and the team to improve and be truly successful practice must be a priority. The Racer’s summer swim season typically starts in late April and runs through the end of June.

Swimmers practice five days a week throughout the season at a set time for their age group or skill level. The practice schedule starts with after-school practices, and switches to morning practices after school is out. Swimmers will practice and compete by age group.

Swim Meets

Team competitions, swim meets, are held on Saturday mornings and begin the beginning of May. Meets are held each Saturday through the end of June.

The team will also have a Time Trial meet typically held the first Saturday of May. The time trial meet is important because it gives each swimmer an opportunity to have an official time recorded for each stroke and event they’ll swim that season. The time trial meet also gives new Racer families an opportunity to see how a swim meet is run.

Parent Volunteers

RRST is a volunteer organization that is completely parent run. The only paid postions of the team are the coaches.

In order to have a successful swim team season, we must all give of our time. We need a variety of volunteers to serve in a variety of jobs, most of which are filled at our Saturday swim meets by working a specified volunteer job on a specified shift. We also need volunteers willing to fill jobs outside of swim meets. All volunteers will have the opportunity to see their child swim in every meet, regardless of the job they are working. Volunteering allows you to learn new skills, meet new people, and become part of the well-oiled machine that is swim team! We appreciate you as volunteers and as part of our swim team family.

Every family is required to pay a volunteer deposit to RRST in the form of a check. All families are required to earn volunteer points during the swim team season by volunteering at swim meets and/or by performing other swim team-related volunteer jobs. Volunteer points will be tallied weekly by the RRST volunteer coordinator and all families who accrue required points during the season will have their check returned to them at the end of the season. Those that do not accrue required points during the season will have their check cashed by RRST at the close of the season.

Volunteer points earned by RRST families will come from points attributed to each volunteer position available. Point values will vary according to job difficulty, hours spent on job, etc.

One of the goals of the volunteer coordinator to assist parents in finding volunteer jobs that best suite their schedule and needs. Single parents, families with small children, and children with special needs can speak with the volunteer coordinator for assistance in finding volunteer job/s that are best suited to their situation.

There is a new parent meeting held prior to the start of practice that addresses all the questions new swim team families might have about the upcoming season.
